The objective of The Teal-Jones Group Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Plan is to provide a vehicle for transferring higher level sustainable forest management commitments to "on the ground commitments".
The purpose of the Sustainable Forest Management Plan is to outline: Teal's approach to achieve sustainable forest management; the current state of the Defined Forest Area (DFA); as well as, the local values, objectives, indicators, and targets of Sustainable Forest Management developed through the public participation process. Teal has voluntarily committed to meeting the Canadian Standards Association Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Z809-08 Standard in order to achieve their objective of managing the resources within the DFA in a sustainable manner. This is in addition to the rigorous legislation, regulations and policies that Teal adheres to during forest management within the DFA.
The following documents highlight the results of The Teal Jones Group's (Teal's) Sustainable Forest Management Plan 2011 Annual Report. Please note the results of the 2011 annual report are found in Appendix 2 which contains detailed information on each indicator as well as the current status and results of annual reports. This Appendix has three parts: those indicators applicable to the Southwest Island portion of the DFA are located in Appendix 2a; those indicators applicable to the Fraser Valley portion of the DFA are located in Appendix 2b; and the results for those indicators applicable to the entire DFA are located in Appendix 2c.
The 2011 version of the SFMP includes several new and revised indicators. The Public Advisory Groups revisited all Sustainable Forest Management criterions over the last few years, amalgamating those indicators that were common for both portions of the DFA, creating core indicators and re-writing targets for existing indicators where it made sense to do so.
The following are highlights of the 2011 annual report:
- 36 of 37 DFA indicators were in conformance.
- 2 DFA indicators (D2.2 Reportable Spills and C5.2.2 Level of Investment in Training and Skills Development) did not meet the target but were within the acceptable variance.
- 1 DFA indicator (D2.4 Stand Establishment) did not meet the target or variance.
- All 19 indicators within the Fraser portion of the DFA were in conformance.
- All 17 indicators within the Honeymoon Bay portion of the DFA were in conformance. One indicator (H2.1 Protection Riparian Resources) did not meet the target but was within the acceptable variance.
- Over a million seedlings planted in the DFA in 2011 (627,300 in the Fraser Valley, and 406,230 in Honeymoon Bay).
- No industrial caused wildfires, 1 reportable spill, and 1 landslide near recently built roads.
- Over 7 million dollars spent in local communities through donations to Community Groups, silviculture projects, First Nations communities & projects, funding of Public Advisory Groups, and taxes & fees.
- 7 Aboriginal employment contracts completed.
- First Nations capacity building projects completed, including an SFM questionnaire distributed to over 50 First Nations communities.
- Active community involvement including initiation of the Sites of Special Significance communications protocol in Hatzic and Steelhead communities, and field tours to college students, tourism workers and retired professional foresters.
